Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle KStJ, DL (22 May 1859 – 7 July 1930) was a British writer and physician, most noted for his fictional stories about the detective Sherlock Holmes, which are generally considered milestones in the field of crime fiction.
He is also known for writing the fictional adventures of a second character he invented, Professor Challenger, and for popularising the mystery of the Mary Celeste. Doyle is often referred to as "Sir Arthur Conan Doyle" or simply "Conan Doyle" (implying that Conan is part of a compound surname, as opposed to a given middle name). His baptism entry in the register of St Mary's Cathedral, Edinburgh gives "Arthur Ignatius Conan" as his given names, and "Doyle" as his surname. It also names Michael Conan as his godfather. The cataloguers of the British Library and the Library of Congress treat "Doyle" alone as his surname.

This is an intriguing tale written in 1892 for Harper's Magazine when the world was seemingly gripped by a fascination for Egyptology (called apparently Egyptomania) and the supernatural. Here the two are combined into a story set in Oxford, more precisely in a turret in the corner of the college quad, occupied by three students and an old comedic (I can't help it) rustic. All manner of rum things go on, especially on Bellingham's floor. Not surprisingly there's a spooky denouement involving some running about, not far removed from the antics of Scooby Doo and his associates. However, more serious connoisseurs of Conan Doyle's work may find flavours of H. Rider Haggard, Edgar Allen Poe and even, M. R. James. Rudyard Kipling said that this story gave him his first nightmare in years. H...

The Silver Mirror is another of Conan Doyle's historical short stories, or Tales of Long Ago. This story contrasts with the majority of the other episodes due to its supernatural elements. This tale was first published in 1908 and therefore one of the earlier works destined for his 1911 collection 'The Last Galley: Impressions and Tales'. A very interesting podcast called Doings of Doyle has devoted its latest episode to a discussion of 'The Silver Mirror'. Very interesting for anyone wanting a little more context. It can be found here: http://doingsofdoyle.podbean.com/ I'm not sure if they still have a YouTube presence. I think they even go so far as to discuss John Dee and scrying mirrors - so interesting stuff! Take a look! Thanks for listening and supporting Sherlock Holmes Stor...
